Community Policing
he Hatfield Township Police Department formulated a Community Policing Unit consisting of two officers whose duties involve the community policing concept. The following list identifies some of the community policing tasks and events these officers are involved in:
Training
- Crime Prevention meetings and lectures
- Statistic gathering
- Compiling information for neighborhood watch newsletters
- Conducting neighborhood watch meetings
- Conducting block captain meetings
- Attending meetings involving government, community groups, service organizations, school groups, etc.
- Special events where community policing would flourish
- Develop community surveys/questionnaires to identify community policing needs
The Hatfield Township Police Department’s focus is to change attitudes and project a positive image to help in problem solving, thus improving relations with the citizens of the community. Officers, as a result, receive training in how to enlist the community in creative problem solving and these officers have latitude in exploring new ways to address a host of issues beyond the individual crime incidents. All officers of the department are classified as community policing officers and are full service police officers, not necessarily specialists. They are generalists who can function in a broad fashion and diagnose the strengths and weaknesses of the neighborhoods and jointly develop a plan of action to resolve problems.
Bike Unit
The Hatfield Bike Unit was founded in 1998. In the beginning, the unit consisted of three officers utilizing two bicycles. Over the past few years, the unit has grown to eight officers and six bicycles. The unit operates from April through October and the bike’s stealthy agility helps the officers patrol the community from a closer vantage point. The bikes are used for routine residential/business patrols, crowd control, and special events.

The Hatfield Police Traffic Safety Unit is a specialized unit that is an integral part of the department. When the unit was formed several years ago, it was a three-officer unit. Due to an increase in serious accidents and a growing need for more highly trained officers, the unit now consists of seven officers. These officers are all certified accident reconstructionists, with each respective member having an area of expertise. All members take part in investigating serious and fatal accidents; while others are weigh masters and inspection mechanics. These particular talents are tools that are used for specific accidents. The unit also carries out child seat inspections, truck safety inspections, and seat belt usage details. All TSU officers are members of the North Penn Area DUI enforcement team, which is active throughout the year. All in all, the TSU is recognized as one of the finest in the area.
